Nicholas here (you may know my dad Rob aka smetlogik). First real post for me. Just made a quick trip down to SE Colorado. Pretty dry down there. Several of the regular water sources were dried up. We still managed to find a few things.
Tx Horned
Small Western Hog found at campsite early in am.
Hiked a wash and found this guy in a small pool. He was the only salamander in the pool feasting away. Temps were 100 and it was around 1:00pm.
Box turtle. These haven’t been easy to find down in SE CO over the past few years.
Woodhouse’s found in the remains of a river.
Couch’s Spadefoot. Cruised on road after it rained one night.
NM Spadefoot.
Nightsnake.
Longnose. This guy was a big snake (24”-36”). Good color too.
Coachwhip. Found several of these guys basking on the dirt roads one morning.
No softshells in the river, ended up with this guy.
Found an old underground cellar that has tons of bats.
Saw intense lightening striking the ground a few miles up the road. Came around a bend to find this on the side of the road. Lots of wildfires here in CO this year.
This is grass in CO.
A fellow herper thought we’d be fooled by this? Takes more than this to get us.
Had a good time down there. Only stayed for two days and found several prairies, blackheaded, lined, dor hog at night, plains garters, several coaches, tx horneds, collareds, whiptail, and some bats. More to come. Thanks for looking.
